Brazen eBook Katherine Longshore
I have difficulty rating this novel, because I think it was so well done that Katherine herself deserves a 5. I didn't realize until the end that these are all true, historical characters. Now I can't wait to research them all for myself. It's a fascinating history, and the plot of the story is very unique and intriguing.Katherine's writing was like poetry. It was delightful from word to word, and her descriptions were beautiful. She's inspirational, to say the least. I feel that taking on a historical story with so much heartache cannot be done any better.
I have no complaints over Katherine's work, but the story itself was depressing from the last half of the story until the heartbreaking end. I was glad, however, that she ended it on a hopeful note, and not a note of complete despair. Once feeling that everything was lost and only going further downhill, every crisis started to seem ridiculous, and I began to laugh. There was just no hope, and everything was going wrong. Everything was falling apart. And it would've been utterly ridiculous, if it weren't for the fact that most of the events actually happened. I also had a problem with Madge (the main character's best friend). I thought she was really annoying.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves a well-written Romeo and Juliet kind of story.

Brazen eBook Katherine Longshore Reviews
Brazen was great. After the Manor of Secrets fail, I was hopeful that I would enjoy other books by Katherine Longshore because there was something about Manor of Secrets that told me her other books had the potential to be really good. I am soooo happy to say that Brazen proves that theory to be true.
Let’s start with the characters because that was my least favorite part of Manor of Secrets. When I started Brazen, I was on edge. I paid special attention to the characters to see if they did anything incredibly outlandish that would just seem wrong for the time period. There were maybe one or two instances where I’m not so sure that the characters were truly behaving in accordance with the time period, but that was it. For the most part they behaved in a manner befitting the time period and I cannot even express how happy this makes me because otherwise I wouldn’t have really enjoyed the book.
Aside from their actions, I also really liked them as people — especially Mary and Fitz. They were so cute together and all of their interactions just felt really genuine and sweet. If you’re a fan of those innocent, first-love types of romances, you’ll love this one! I also really liked Mary’s brother and I just felt so bad for him at times, even though he was a supporting character.
I love that Katherine Longshore took two of the more obscure figures in Tudor history to write about. I learned a lot more about the Tudor court and the historical figures of the time through her writing. I was so curious as to what would happen, I had to restrain myself from looking it up on Gooogle!
Brazen is a wonderful addition to YA historical fiction and I am so looking forward to reading some of her other novels. So glad I decided to give this one a chance, and I hope you do too!
Note Brazen is a companion book to Gilt and Tarnish. You do not have to read the other books successfully follow along with this story.
Brazen was my first Katherine Longshore book, and my first YA historical fiction read in awhile. I was immediately intrigued by the idea of loving your own husband, yet be forbidden from true intimacy (and I mean that in its full definition).
Although I’ve read historical fiction books before, Brazen stands above them all. It’s got a richness of detail that is marked. And the historical accuracy is very, very close to the actual events. I don’t mind when a book deviates from what really took place, but in this novel the small changes made only added to the sweetness of the story.
For example, no one can know with certainty that Mary Howard had feelings for her own husband, but the idea that she could have, and that it was forbidden is quite romantic and silly by our modern-day standards.
It’s not that she and Fitz couldn’t be in love, it was that because Fitz was the illegitimate son of the king and the only male heir, he could have been made king. And, the king didn’t want him to die, which he feared because he thought too much sexual activity had hastened Fitzoy’s elder brother Arthur’s death, and the King had ordered the couple not to consummate their marriage. (Thanks, wikipedia).
Strange but true.
I liked the Longshore showed what the inside of court life was really like. It seems tumultuous and changeable. There are sides to be taken and favor to be lost.
Plus, Mary Howard is a writer of sorts, and her descriptions and metaphors of marriage and friendship and kissing are so powerful. She describes these things in tastes and smells, and I loved seeing how she viewed the world.
Books like this connect me with the past and make me marvel again at how things used to be and how teenagers still act like teens no matter the era.
Because of the historical accuracy of the book’s timeline, there are definitely a few lulls in which there is not huge driving force behind the plot – court life is just what’s going down. I didn’t mind this in the least, but it’s certainly a different pace from say, a dystopian or post-apocalyptic novel, so just be prepared.
OVERALL
In a time when women had little independence and obedience was expected, I loved reading about the quietly strong Mary Howard. Longshore did a fantastic job of making the Tudor life as unruly and opulent as it’s reported to have been and to make young adult issues hundreds of years ago as relevant and interesting as ever. Brazen is a YA powerful historical fiction read, and I’m officially a fan of this author!
Good read
the book is really good
This is one of those books that you can't put down - the characters live in your mind and you become desperate to know more! Such a great story - I am new to this author but now I am reading all her books - her writing is well done, sometimes a bit confusing, but her characters are well thought out and easy to visualize.
it was a quick read, but often felt a little scattered. Situations would trail off and never be picked up again but over all I liked te book and the storyline.
Love it !!!!! Will recommend to friends and it is a good book for a book club they whole series is great.
