First book was much better. The story line was pretty weak in this one until the end overall. The demon fight club was just uninteresting and went on for far too long. The writer should have a much better understanding of fighting and techniques if she's going to write about assassins so much. Our main character Sabina seems more like a person who has no assassin skills and certainly doesn't seem like one even though she's like 53 years old and should have lots of experience and her personality does not reflect any killer instinct or attitude at all. Her thinking is like a teenage girl in high school, instead of a battle hardened killer. Her pet demon was very interesting in the first book and continues to lose interest and seem weak as well. I'll give the next book a read, but if it's as bad as this one that will end the series for me. This book feels more like a filler to lead into the 3rd book, so I'm hoping for the best because there's still something about the books I like, just not sure if it's enough to keep reading them.

The first book in the series lacked depth and I found the heroine somewhat flat, however there was some interesting world building and it was competently enough written. I bought the second books in the hopes that, with more experience, the author would bring to it what was missing in the first.

I found quite the opposite. As another reviwer noted, the heroine talks tough but is constantly getting her butt kicked. Further, she is bullied and manipulated by everyone to the extent that I found myself gritting my teeth and wanting to give her a good slapping before I was even a third into the book.

The author has created an interesting world and some interesting secondary characters, but the heroine that she puts into that world has moved from being flat to being downright annoying (and still flat). I regret wasting money on the book. How some other reviewers gave it an honest 5 stars is beyond me. It isn't even close to meritiing them.
We have seen how bad one side of Sabina's family is, now we get to see the Mage side. This is a whole different world for Sabina, all these Mages with all their unfamiliar abilities.

It is hard for Sabina to be in this vulnerable position, not knowing and having to trust the people around her. At least there is Giguyl. I love that demon! He is such a hilarious character and it is fun to see how much of a role he plays in this book.

Sabina runs into an old acquaintance, and even though he will possibly give Adam a challenge, I can't help but like him. I think it is the "bad boy" in him.

I really enjoyed The Mage in Black. The vulnerable position that Sabina is in makes me feel for her and really just want to be there for her. I loved Maisie, she is sweet and funny, just a great character. The action was great and the book ended with a great segue into Green-Eyed Demon.

I recommend this whole series and give this individual book a 4 stars for it's action and emotional pull.

What I Loved The whole cast of characters used in this book. Maisie, Adam, Sabina, G, and V were all fantastic. Though, I have to say Rhea is my favorite! I also really loved Micheal and Slade, they stepped it up when they needed too. I can't really say what I loved most about this book without spoilers but I want to make sure that you understand this is one of the best Urban Fantasy Series that I have read. Jaye does a fantastic job of weaving all elements good plot, great pacing, humor, kick *ss but tortured heroin, and an amazing supporting cast that you love almost more than the lead. It was one of those books that you can read cover to cover and not want to put down.

What I Liked Demon Fight Club! This was a much needed humor break and to be honest, anything that puts G in the drivers seat is fun. Plus, his last fight was classic!

Why I gave it a 5 This was just such a good read. I laughed, had fun, got frustrated, wanted to strangle some characters, and felt like we got to know all the characters for exactly who they are.

Who I would recommend it too UF readers and even PNR readers (though this is a bit more gritty and there is no HEA).

I'm pretty much a sucker for "pretty-but-tough" female supernatural plotlines. However, I really have trouble when the entire foundation of the character and story are repeatedly ignored or violated. It happened so often in this book that I quit, half way through.

The first book in the series had its flaws, but the characterizations were good and the plotline (barely) explained some of the lapses-of-character. In that book, our first meeting with the Vampire Assassin/Enforcer main-character is her cold-blooded shooting of a tough who won't take no for an answer. OK - she walks around armed to the teeth with specialized weapons that are particularly effective against supernaturals. Last time we see her use anything but a knife, of course - but the story did offer some rationale as to why that might be so.

In "The Mage in Black", Sabina Kane is deliberately going into exile from her former clan/family/employers, and into the bosom of a culture she has been brought up to distrust, fear, and even hate. What possible justification could there be for her to continue wandering around, hunted by old friends and new foes alike, with nothing more than a couple of knives? Professional assassin trained from toddlerhood my @$$! People are always getting the drop on her, and she is perennially unarmed. Possibly necessary for plot progression, but just too out-of-character to credit.
