Undone The Guardians Book 1 eBook Jessica Roe

This is a fantasy book for adults, in that the themes and the writing style are sophisticated and complex. So is the plot, so let me see if I can sort of summarize it...

Nicky is recently out of jail, having spent a one year sentence when it was supposed to be six. Soon he is drafted by Walker and Charles into a government organization called the Guardians, because, as they explain, he’s a shadow guide. It takes a while for Nicky to understand what that means, but he's always known that he can see dead people in a shadow-like form, and now it's his job to protect humans from outcasts and vice versa. Outcasts are people with magical abilities, like witches, elves, and dwarves.

Nicky had always hated that he could see shadows - he thought it meant he was crazy, and he started taking drugs, which eventually lead to his jail time. Now he’s trying to work hard and be a good person, and accept both his abilities and limitations.

But his involvement with the Guardians reunites him with Gable, a bad girl he can’t help but be drawn to. They were once in love but now they’re working against each other, and that leads to all sorts of adventure, intrigue, and possible redemption.

The story centers mostly around Nicky, and his dialogue and interactions with the more reserved, official characters in the Guardians is both funny and clever. The whole book is clever; it mixes the impeccably drawn possibility of a secret fantasy world with some adult grit and drama. That’s not to say there isn’t humor, there is, in addition to romance. All in all, Undone is a great read, and I’m looking forward to the second installment. Well done!

Undone The Guardians Book 1 eBook Jessica Roe Reviews

I enjoyed every minute I spent with the characters of Undone.

Nicky Pierce, newly released from prison, is recruited by the Guardians because of a talent he didn’t know he had. He can communicate with the shadow people, dead people, and he soon he sounds himself part of an organization whose goal is to save the disappearing outcasts. For the first time in his life Nicky has a purpose.

Gable loved Nicky once, in high school, but he broke her heart. Then she’d been Gabrielle and she’d had a family. After that she was alone, became Gable, and met a man, a werewolf, and her best friend. He disappears and she meets Pablo who soon makes her his “right hand man”.

In an easy back and forth from Gable’s to Nicky’s point of view and some flashbacks to the past, the story deftly unfolds. It becomes clear to the Guardians that Pablo may be taking the outcasts, who are magical beings, and using them for his own nefarious purposes. And as they fight to stop a potentially frightening outcome, an impromptu reunion with Gable has Nicky wandering who his former girlfriend has become.

With a refreshing and unique turn of phrase, the author brings alive a fascinating group of characters that had me turning pages to see what would happen next. Will the evil Pablo gain Gable’s full trust, and use her in his deadly plot, or will she realize who he is before becoming what he wants her to be?
Undone

Engrossing and fast paced, "Undone" is set firmly in the paranormal genre, with a strong thriller/crime element and love interests that actually add to the plot, rather than slowing it. The non-stop action starts when ex-con Nicky can't get a job, but is head hunted by the Guardians; a government funded undercover team whose mission is to stop supernatural beings, (The Outcasts,) from preying on humans – and each other.

The author's sparkling imagination conjures up new myths, while presenting werewolves, witches, fairies and physics in a totally different light. An excellent mix of characters, all of whom have motive and natural dialogue, interacting and developing relationships with each other.

The story is told from two points of view First up is Nicky, who having accepted the Guardian's job offer (pay's dreadful, hours are long, but hey, what's a bad guy trying to go good gonna do?) finds himself in direct conflict with an immortal, Pablo, who is feared by humans and Outcasts alike.
Nicky is devastated to find his high-school sweetheart, Gable, now works as Pablo's right hand woman. He can't understand how this good girl has turned so bad, and tries to redeem her. But then a physic accidentally 'sees' Pablo's terrifying master plan, and Gable's given orders to kill both the physic and her young daughter.

The second point of view shows why ex-cheerleader Gable (Gabrielle,) decided working for Pablo was her only career choice. Her soul mate, Sacha simply disappeared from the face of the earth one day. As a werewolf, Sacha was outcast even from the Outcasts, even though he'd never hurt anyone, and locked himself away at full moon. Some of the Outcasts remain sympathetic and use their various powers to seek out Sacha, but without success. Gable is told to give up hope. But she can't.

At the lowest ebb of Gable's search, just when she finally decides everything's hopeless, Pablo befriends her and offers employment. Immortals intent on world domination can get lonely, and Pablo comes to look on Gable as a daughter; while Gable feels indebted to him, and although knowing what she's doing is wrong, tries to please her employer, who slowly raises the stakes.

When Pablo orders Gable to commit the ultimate crime, Nicky is determined to stop her, even if it means killing his first love.

"Undone" is a roller-coaster start to a new series that invokes the Harry Potter world for grown-ups. This debut adventure held one last surprise, although all the clues were there, providing a delightful 'of course!' feeling of satisfaction. However, the author leaves enough intrigue to continue this story arc, and I look forward to joining the Guardians on their next adventure. A skilfully written debut that will thrill lovers of paranormal and adventure, don't miss this one!
This book is hard to review. On the one hand I LOVED the story. The characters are good, the plot is engaging, and it moves along well. But (And this is a big but for me) it needs an editor's touch. There are a lot of misused words, misspellings, and inconsistencies. I would have happily given a four star review for the story alone (I almost never give 5 stars) but the technical stuff gets in the way of enjoying the story. There are times I really like the characters but then the writing changes and I don't feel like it is the same person. It makes it hard to engage with the characters. So, would I recommend this book? It is a qualified yes. Unless you're an experienced fantasy editor. Then it is a whole-hearted yes, please! This book deserves someone taking the time to work with the author to make it what it could be.
