Rebel Streets A Novel of the Irish Troubles Tom Molloy 9780984835911 Books

"Rebel Streets", by Tom Molloy is perhaps the best novel I have had the pleasure to read regarding the the Irish "Times of Troubles". Molloy obviously knows his subject matter from the blood stained Belfast cobblestone streets to the anger, animosity, and vengeance between Catholic IRA Rebels, to that of Protestant and British rule. His characters are "real" ... at least in the sense of their thoughts, ideals, feelings, fears, and mistrust.
Molloy is a superb writer! His descriptive writing flows like the smoothness of the Shannon River, yet takes the reader into the darkest corners of Belfast's slums of poverty, hatred, and age old wars.
Molloy walks the reader from smoke filled IRA Pubs, and pints of Guiness to the Special Operations Group of the British Para's, and Police stations to the secret offices of MI5 with nothing more than his sterling story telling ability.
For anyone who has an inkling of interest in the "Times of Troubles" you must read this novel. It is superb and will leave you wanting more, and more!

Rebel Streets A Novel of the Irish Troubles Tom Molloy 9780984835911 Books Reviews

Rebel Streets can send you reeling. The book can pick you right up and throw you in the middle of those streets. Not a comfortable place to be. And what an understatement that is. This stuff did not happen in the distant past. Imagine being afraid to open your front door, being afraid to send your children to school, being afraid to live in your own neighborhood. Think about it. Imagine that this fear can become the norm. You have no other choice. Rebel Streets is so well written, but hard to read because I was afraid to turn the pages. I could not put it down, like racing to the end with the brakes on. A harrowing time for these people that love so hard and fight with deadly accuracy. I could hear the sharp, gritty click of heels on the wet streets accompanied by cigarette smoke and damp. Always, always looking and listening for a sniper's bullet. Sweat soaked fright, torture....be prepared. It's funny; so hard to read, to be a witness, but I did not want it to end. I wanted to protect; I wanted it solved. Rebel Streets needs to be read so that we can have some measure of understanding, some method of detection before it can be repeated.
As an American w/ Irish ancestry ~ this novel found my soul says few others have. The characters were key in creating a real page turner. Visual landscapes put me in a world that seemed like a dream.
Excellent read

This is a very poignant story written elegantly! It isn't just a story of people but of the feelings of what it was like to be present in a time of war. I really felt like I was there!
I am Irish so I found the history interesting. Good read.
Good tale of conflict in Northern Ireland
The troubles were such a conflicting time in history and this book captured that so well. No one was completely innocent and no one was let off the hook.
I intend to add more, much more, to this review. I need to explain that I'm only a few chapters into this novel. But, if the first few are any indication of the narrative to follow, I am totally driven by this book. We are introduced to one of the most violent times in Irish history and the forces driving hatred, blood-letting, and terrorism in what should be a civilized land. The author writes with tremendous insight into the human condition - especially its very raw and deadly aspects. I will keep you posted, but you should consider this compelling book by Tom Molloy.
(Updated 6/16/13) As the storylines evolved with horrific, honorable, and tender aspects all, I decided not to provide any additional details. The author's style varies. One device he employs are the characters' musings which, if minds are the most impenetrable fortresses, offer the reader the most telling insights regarding the people and times of The Troubles. Myself of Irish ancestry, I could weep.... Read this book, then say a Hail Mary for the lot of them -- both sides.
