Tita by Marie Houzelle is a small delight to read. A reviewer on Goodreads spoke of the sense you have of being drawn into French culture, which I'd agree is a large part of the pleasure-- feeling like you're learning something from the inside out. The main character is the precocious little girl Tita, who lives with her little sister, her frivolous fashionista mother, (who turns out to be afraid of having her lower class roots show), and her father, older and divorced. He worries about his business failing. Meanwhile Tita and her little sister have older half-sibs who live in Paris and are super cool to the little girls, and the older sister makes close friends with the second wife, Tita's mother. The father's family is traditional--Catholic school for the girls even if it isn't a very good school. Real struggles, but all told with a light touch, and très français.

Tita is a deep dive into the magical contradictions of childhood.
Seven years old, freakishly bright, and French, Tita mixes penetrating observation with innocence, a joy in the simplest pleasures of childhood with an extremely adult angst about existence and the precise meaning of everything. Intoxicated with the power of words in a society that cherishes the unsaid, attracted to ritual and pageantry but uncompromising in her denunciation of all that is false, Tita wants badly to fit in, but in her heart she suspects she never really will. Her sufferings are not just spiritual. Lactose intolerant in the land of cheese, every meal is a torture for her. And yet, for all that, she is a plucky, witty, good-natured and fearless little girl.
She cannot stand injustice or cruelty or lies, and is, despite her bookish precocity, profoundly compassionate.
And this, in the wonderfully crisp writing of Marie Houzelle, makes Tita a heroine to be reckoned with.
Tita is an exceptional creation, one that stays with the reader for a long time.
Beautifully written and evocative of an earlier time when the line between what could and could not be done in "good" society was all that mattered. Marie Houzelle is a terrifically talented writer, particularly since English is not her first, or even second, language. Her characters are pitch-perfect and fully engaging and bring the reader effortlessly into their world, a small town in the French south, circa 1953. I would have liked to have seen more of that world, in fact, the postwar transition to mechanization, the political edginess between right and left, or even a stronger sense of the South. A fuller backdrop would have been a solid complement to the interiority of Tita's point of view. Marie Houzelle has demonstrated narrative mastery by telling the story from this point of view, that of a seven-year-old girl, and keeping the reader hanging onto every line. (Personally I did not find the age of the narrator persuasive, so I set it aside mentally and considered her to be 10 or so. I understand from a published interview that Marie Houzelle was herself a precocious and highly advanced child for her age, but this is supposed to be a novel, not a memoir.) I highly recommend this book for young adults and adults alike.
Tita is the story of a bright little girl growing up in the Southern Part of France in the late 1950s in an upper-class family. She reads everything she can get her hand on and loves to look up meaning and origin of words in dictionaries. Sometimes she even catches her teacher making mistakes. But not everything is ideal. Her father's business is failing and according to tradition she soon will have to go to a strict boarding school to continue her education.

Marie Houzelle manages to give Tita a voice that is totally believable and kept me turning the pages trying to figure out what would happen next. Having had French in school I was familiar with many of the French terms thrown in, but for those less fluent there is an extensive glossary at the end of the book.

A charming story that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

What a treat! Reader, do let seven-year old Tita be your guide to her world as she discovers it. Her explorer tools are unusual, for besides a good heart, uncanny intelligence, and remarkable poise, she relies heavily on Latin, dictionaries, and novels. A whole world unfolds before our eyes a Provence entangled in rigid social codes, a time of changing mores and family fortunes, memorable characters. Understanding the world ultimately means understanding oneself. Who do I want to become? Who can I become? Tita does what all great novels do – portray a world and a compelling heroine’s becoming in that world – and does it in a light, poised and intelligent style. Just like Tita.
This is a true delight a French writer who has written in English (and thankfully not Latin!). Tita is a novel about a seven year old girl in a small Catholic town in the south of France set during the 1950s. It opens up to us a very different take on what France is like. The language is delightful, right down to Tita's glossary from her point of view! Tita is a courageous heroine who charms us in surprising ways.
